American composer Alvin Lucier’s score for “Music for Cello with One or More Amplified Vases” provides a specific yet improvisational set of directives to work with. In collaboration with cellist Laura Cetilia, vessel shapes that maximized the reverberations of the cello were conceived and then fashioned out of molten glass. This exploration culminated in two performances, one for Community MusicWorks’ “ars subtilior, no 2” series at Machines with Magnets (Pawtucket, RI), and the second for Brown University’s colloquium “Alvin Lucier – Sound in Space” – a two day symposium during which Lucier spoke and ran a workshop.
