Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, a model cradles a hot chunk of Niijima Island’s natural volcanic rock. This rock (a biotite rhylolite) called Koga-seki, was historically used as a building and carving stone – now it is being melted into glass. It is this rhyolitic lava glass creates a glowing mass that sits in the model’s apron. This performative gesture is based on Millet’s The Gleaners.
